Psychopharmacology—using medications to treat psychiatric problems—can be very helpful for some people. I prescribe medication for some, but not all, of my therapy patients, and I also prescribe medications for patients who are seen by other therapists. It is rare for me to prescribe medication for patients who are not in therapy at all.

Some people worry that alleviating symptoms by taking medication might stop them from making progress in therapy. In my experience, this is rarely if ever the case, and it is much more frequent that alleviating symptoms allows people to make better progress in therapy.
